1xtra Live – Brixton Review

BBC 1xtra Live concluded its 4 legged tour in the country’s capital, London on Thursday night at the 02 Brixton Academy.

With an almost entire female line-up bar Big Sean, the ladies were represented in full force with stars such as Jessie J, Kelly Rowland the UK Female all-stars taking to the stage.

Arriving late in true Asian fashion, I took my seat in upper tier looking down on Jessie J as she opened the show in her sexy sequence bodysuit. Of course performing hits such as Price Tag and Do It Like A Dude are sure winners with the audience but for anyone even watching at home, Who You Are stole the show for me. Before she performed it she addressed the criticism she received after her recent X-Factor performance. Her deliverance of each note after certainly squashed any doubt about her vocal talent.

The Female UK all-stars consisting of Mz Bratt, Lady Leshurr, RoxXxan, Lioness, Baby Blue and A.Dot owned the stage with a collective performance of ‘Rock The Mic’. Their talents are sure to test many male MC’s without a doubt. DJ Kayper completed the female contingent with her slick and flawless scratching during the set.

With the UK having set the levels for the remainder of the night, Big Sean, who I was expecting some what of an epic performance failed to really deliver as I’d hoped. His tunes are easily categorised into club bangers with Marvin Gaye & Chardonnay and A$$ yet the set felt rather lackluster. Again, the ladies were probably left feeling a little more appreciative as he paraded round the stage topless. I am a Big Sean fan but the set never connected with me.

1xtra DJs throughout the night were in the mix keeping the crowd buzzing from Robbo Ranx dropping big Dancehall beats assisted by Nick Bright and Ronnie Herel mashing up RnB & Hip Hop joints. As from the previous shows, Mistajam and Trevor Nelson hosted well.

The final performance was from UK X-Factor judge and former Destiny’s Child member, Kelly Rowland. Those in search of a free Chippendale show in addition would have been duly happy with her male backing dancers assisting her in every way. The stand out songs for me had to be Lay It On Me with of course Big Sean taking to the stage and one of the pop RnB hits of 2011, Motivation.

Who knows how 1xtra will top this year however the coverage has been fantastic across the 4 nights with fans having the option of listening via radio, watching via the Red button and re-living the performances online. Many have named Wretch 32 as their stand out performer.
