It was only by pure chance I stumbled across the now recognised Childish Gambino a few weeks back after receiving a promo of Bonfire. My initial impression had me comparing the song to Lil Wayne’s A Milli. Maybe the similarity was in the tempo and production but Gambino’s intensity on the tune is wild and far more impressive.
His album, Camp, is now out on Glassnote Records who also house the likes of Mumford & Sons, Two Door Cinema Club & Temper Trap.
Again, this time thanks to Serato Whitelabel, I picked up Heartbeat. I’m completely blown away and now even more intrigued to hear the entire album. The intro of the song is reminiscent of The Weeknd/Drake before the electro explosion.
The subject matter may appear light in comparison to Bonfire but the tone still remains as fierce.
He did in fact perform it live on the American talk show, Conan a week or so back but it never really carried the same energy as the original in my opinion.
In conclusion, the song is a hit.
Buy the album Camp now. You may or may not be suprised that it debuted at No.2 behind Drake’s Take Care.
Long live Donald Glover!
